Strategy with Kristy: Reid Young Discusses Showdown Value
March 22 2012, Kristy Arnett Related Articles Strategy with Kristy: Tax Time Strategy with Kristy: Quinn Sivage Discusses Min-Raising Button Strategy with Kristy: John Kim Part Two Share It Tags Cash Poker, Online Poker, Poker Players, Poker Strategy, PokerNews Podcast, PokerNews Strategy Print Reid Young is professional poker poker player who, prior to Black Friday, made his living playing online cash-games. In late 2010, he authored, The Blue Book: An Advanced Strategy Guide for No-Limit Hold’em Cash Games, which first sold for $2,500. Young is also a very sought out poker coach and has plans to launch an innovative coaching website. For this edition of the Strategy with Kristy Podcast, he discusses various topics, but really delves into advanced strategy concerning showdown value by illustrating it with a couple of hand histories. Here is a snippet from the interview: This straightforward guy raises in the cutoff. We are 100 big binds, effective, so we both have $200 at $1/$2. I reraise from the big blind with ace-nine suited just because its slightly below my calling requirements. Im not really comfortable calling. I think I can take it down preflop often, combined with continuation betting a decent amount and outplay him postflop, plus the equity of my actual hand versus his calling range gives me several ways I can win money here. I think they all add up to make me a small profit on the play. He called, and wed gone back and forth a little bit before this. I was kind of surprised to see him call. I more expected him to four-bet or fold, which is also why I decided to three-bet a hand like ace-nine. Im not as dominated by his calling range, and if he four-bets, I can just get away. It makes it easier to play and less likely that hes going to have an ace-X hand that he can combat my light three-bet with. The flop comes three-four-five, all different suits. This is a pretty good flop for me and one that puts him in an awkward position with a lot of hands like middle pairs. Also, hed call a bet on the flop with a lot of better ace-highs that I think I can get him to fold by the river. Its a good board for me being the aggressor and not one that he wants to get in a lot hands with. Even if he has a hand like pocket nines, in his best-case scenario, I have ace-king, and hes only a little better than a two-to-one favorite. Its not that amazing for him to raise pocket nines, so I have the green light to continuation bet here, looking to fold out queen-jack suited and hands like that. So, I do c-bet, and he ends up calling. When he calls, combined with the fact that I said that we have a fairly pre-established dynamic preflop, its extremely evident to me that he either has a similar hand to mine like ace-jack or ace-queen, or he has one of those medium pairs like nines, eights, or sevens. I think sixes might be a little too light to peel on this flop, but who knows, he could have those for sure. The turn is a two, which gives me the wheel. Its one of those spots where I have so many ace-highs in my range. Sure, I could have continuation bet the flop with king-queen or complete air like seven-eight, and then continued betting on the turn to try and represent an ace, but Ive found that more straightforward players that play their hands based on equity, just arent going to be calling down with pocket nines here. They are just worried about so much of my range, and they will worry about me betting the river. Its not like they just have to call the turn and the hand is over. I can still over-bet shove the river. I can have sixes in my range as well so its not that amazing of a situation for him if he has an ace, let alone a hand like pocket nines. It would be a really tough call down for him. Thats why I decided to check. Listen to the podcast to hear more of Young’s analysis on this hand.

Strategy with Kristy: Tax Time
March 16 2012, Kristy Arnett Related Articles Strategy with Kristy: John Kim Part Two Strategy with Kristy Podcast: Jared Bleznick Strategy with Kristy: Live Cash Game Coaching Share It Tags Black Friday, PokerNews Podcast, PokerNews Strategy, Poker Strategy, Poker Taxes, Poker Players Print Tax day is quickly approaching in the U.S., so for the latest edition of the Strategy with Kristy podcast, host Krist Arnett talks to Theresa Fox, a tax preparer who specializes in poker. The two discuss general guidelines for filing as a professional poker player, effects of Black Friday on taxes, and suggestions for international players coming to the U.S. to play poker. Here is a snippet from the interview: I take care of a lot of international tax issues because we have so many players come in and do well here. Taxes and gaming go hand-in-hand, and its a big issue. There are a lot of countries that we have treaties with and that can produce a lot of tax problems. If youre a foreigner coming to the United States, you should know, in advance, if the U.S. has a treaty with your country. That may impact if whether you decide to play, and it will impact how much you anticipate winning. You need to know in advance. Is the U.S. going to withhold 30 to 35 percent straight off the top of what you win? If they are, that could impact if youre going to get staked or not. Ive seen so many problems with people coming here, getting staked and having the great problem of cashing. All of a sudden, they want to pay their stakers but a lot of the money gets withheld. The only way to get any of that money back is by filing a non-resident tax return and doing what we all do which is prove our expenses. It can be an issue. What I would suggest for foreigners coming here is to know whether you live in a treaty or non-treaty country, bring lots of identification and documentation with you to show what country you live in, and if you dont already have one, get an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). That, in essence, is what us Americans call a social security number. Its how our IRS system identifies you. If you dont have an ITIN, a tax preparer cant put together a tax return for you. File for that while you are here. Its a time-consuming process, so get that started while youre here. The casinos typically can help you, but Ill be very honest. Its a service they provide, but they dont do a very good job following up. Ive seen so many foreigners go through the casino, but if theres a problem, they get zero customer service. The IRS has whats called a Certified Acceptance Agent. Find one while youre here in the United States. They are basically like a notary, but they are allowed to do foreign documents. They will help you do the application. So, get an ITIN while youre here or at least apply for it. If you do get that score, you are ready for it. Then you can go home and file taxes from wherever you are. With technology these days, sometimes I dont even see my clients. Without an ITIN though, were starting from scratch. If you have an ITIN and you are from a treaty country, you actually wouldnt have to have any money withheld. Setting up an ITIN in advance will save you a lot of hassle and stress while you are here and then you can concentrate on playing.

Top 5 Poker TV Shows
published on 03/04/11 at 9:00 am Looking to catch some great poker action on your television set this week? Then, this is the article that clues you in about where all the poker action is. So, read on to find out which TV channels you have to set your dial to for watching shows packed with poker glitz!! #1 Poker TV Show: GSNs High Stakes PokerThis show was launched in 2006 and was one-of-a-kind among all existing poker shows because one could sit alongside the top poker professionals from all corners of the globe, such as Barry Greenstein, Daniel Negreanu of PokerStars, and Jen Harman as opposed to the tournament format of other shows. Thus, this show allowed viewers to watch the poker biggies gamble with their personal cash (tons of it, really considering each player had to buy-in using USD 100,000 with variations of deals one doesnt normally get to see anywhere else. #2 Poker TV show: ESPNs World Series of PokerThis show has got to be the biggest ever in televised poker event history since nowhere else can viewers tune in to such a tremendous variety of poker games. It rapidly climbed up the TRP charts and became the Travel Channels top rated program because of great poker tournament coverage from across the countrys best casinos. Each hand that is relayed on the TV screen causes hearts of poker fans to beat faster with the pace of the action speeding up across all the different channels the show airs on: from Fox Sports to Travel Channel to GSN, which is sponsored by PokerStars.net, viewers have a choice of which channel they want to change the dial for in order to be part of the poker claim to fame just like the pros featured on this show! #4 Poker TV show: Bravos Celebrity Poker ShowdownThis show really built up the games popularity, much like the shows listed above because it brought in a niche audience to watch their favorite stars vying for great poker prize pools amid light-hearted bantering and some fabulous on-screen chemistry between the hosts: Phil Gordon of FullTilt and Dave Foley who came across as naturals when it came to informative commentary of the shows action. Lots of poker fun, cool prizes, celebrity flavors and the rumors of poker veteran Phil Hellmuth taking to the hosting keep this TV show on the hot list of many card game enthusiasts. #5 Poker TV show: GSNs Poker RoyaleThis TV show about poker is unique because it combines two opposing groups that come together to duke it out at the poker table, across different segments like Girls versus Boys or Celebrities versus Professionals. Three players from each group face each other at the No Limit Holdem tournament and compete for the host of prizes and of course, fan favor!

Strategy with Kristy: Chris George Discusses Mixed Games
March 08 2012, Kristy Arnett Related Articles Strategy with Kristy: Quinn Sivage Discusses Min-Raising Button Strategy with Kristy: John Kim Part Two Strategy with Kristy: John Kim Part One Share It Tags PokerNews Podcast, PokerNews Strategy, Poker Strategy Print Chris George is not your typical Internet poker player. Rather than specialize in no-limit Texas hold’em, the most popular game among his peers, the 22-year-old is much more adept at playing mixed games. George is the latest guest on the Strategy with Kristy podcast, and he discusses seven-card stud and razz strategy. Here is a snippet from the interview during which he discusses playing middle pairs in seven-card stud. Even in the highest staked games like the $600/$1,200 game I was playing, people were opening a pair of threes with a six kicker in early position with a ton of high cards behind them. They were just opening these hands because they liked the action and the nature of the game. That’s obviously a big mistake in [seven-card] stud high because you’re going to get owned way too much. Can you talk about a few situations that would be good to play a middle pair? Late position is always going to be advantageous in stud high because it’s going to be cheaper and you’re closing the action. It depends if you’re middle pair is your door card or if it’s hidden. If it’s hidden, it can be played a lot more loose in any position because of the value of hitting your trips. But, as a general rule of thumb, you should really be playing any middle or low pairs without a really high kicker like an ace or a king. Or, if you’re in later position and there are only a few cards before the bring-in, if you have something like sevens and a jack with no higher cards than a jack behind you, then that’s a good situation to be playing a middle pair.

In defense of Ray Bitar
My View of the Poker Domain seizures part 5 I hear 1000s of members of the poker community and bloggers constantly criticizing Ray Bitar. Granted, there were mistakes made at Full Tilt Poker. Few people stop to consider that all of these mistakes would have never happened if the UIGEA was never passed. Not to mention the very fact that the bill was passed because of illegal bribes and corruption in government at the highest levels. The major problems occurred at Full Tilt Poker when they were forced to deal with having to process money online in an unsavory grey area. The vast majority of banks would not process transactions because the wording of the UIGEA was vague at best. Full Tilt Poker and other sites would allegedly have to label transactions as golf balls or something to that effect. Somewhere along the line bank accounts were be frozen and this led to minor shortfalls. The major shortfall happened when some poker players realized that when they funded their accounts, the money was not debited from the bank account. Unscrupulous poker players started to use this as an exploit and withdrew thousands of dollars. With hundreds of people doing this and word spreading, Full Tilt was exploited for tens of millions. The grey area was created by the UIGEA and if the UIGEA was illegal because of how it was passed, then Ray Bitar may not be to blame entirely. In fact, by the USA signing agreements with the WTO regarding fair trade, the USA has violated the World Trade Organization treaty they signed. Full Tilt Poker and Pokerstars stayed in business in the USA because they had high priced attorneys that advised them that they were on legal grounds. The Wire Act and UIGEA were so ambiguous or outdated, that the DOJ recently said that the Wire Act does not apply to poker. They flip flopped because the DOJ is being proxy run by lobbyist firms. Obviously they should have noticed the massive credited accounts and should have realized that the bank balance was off. We dont know what happened because Full Tilt Poker hasnt spoken much because they have the DOJ wanted to throw them in jail. That is until Bernard Tapie came in as a potential buyer. As soon as that deal was signed the DOJ let up a bit then reversed their position on the WIRE Act. In conclusion, Id say that it is almost impossible to run a company if you have top pros owing you 10 million individually and around 20 million combined. Then, on top of that, buying them into all their tournaments and giving them airfare, hotel, etc etc. Secondly , have players overdraft their accounts tens of millions and chip dump withdraw. And finally, the DOJ indict you, freeze all your properties, freeze all your accounts, and have your top pro add to your legal bills by suing you for ten times what he owes you. So, I dont think Ray Bitar did anything wrong, I just think closer attention should have been paid to these phantom deposits, and less money should have been lent to Ivey and other players.
